Product Description Double-safe backup and storage for all the computers on your network. This powerful dual-drive system provides an extra safe solution for backing up the data on all the computers in your home. Keeping your data double-safe In just a few simple steps, you can set up automatic and continuous back up for all the computers on your network. But wait, there's more - there are two drives in this system and we've set them up to mirror each other using RAID technology. The system automatically and continuously maintains a second copy of your data for double safe data protection. If one drive in this two-drive system ever fails, the system continues to run and your data is safe. How's that for peace of mind? Best addition to my ever growing technology collection August 16, 2010 ashleyangle 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am using this storage device as an external server to hold my music and photos so that I can access the files from any computer I am using in my house. If you are in need of a server but, don't want to devote a whole computer to being a server this is the perfect solution. It is very easy to set up and look great. I definitely recommend it.
It's as big as a brick and performs just as good! August 14, 2010 B. America (East Stroudsburg, PA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My maximum direct hardwired connection throughput on a 1000mb (gig) link was 12.2Mb or 98mb; one tenth the connected speed. Remember that a gig link is in megabits not bytes. I stripped the drive for optimal speed where data is written across both drives, non redundant, for access speed. A lot like older slower drives where you needed a striped raid to keep up with the video stream so you wouldn't get skips and choppy output.
As soon as I received the drive I converted it from RAID 1 to RAID 0. I also upgraded the firmware and tweaked the security settings.
I knew from prior experiences with Maxtor RAID drives that if one drive fails or the unit fails, without the ability to hot swap by the consumer, your data is lost; unless you pay for their "recommended" data recovery services. Think about it: if the unit hardware fails how are you getting your data off the good drives? You're not. If one of the drives fail and you want to get an RMA you better pray that the remaining good drive is accessible. I've been through this before! On the Maxtor (another manufacture) drive array I heard they put an HPA section on their drives so you can't simply open it up and replace it with your own drive. You would need to send it in for service ($). This is why I don't trust any manufacture and their consumer grade RAID systems. I've NEVER had a consumer grade RAID hardware system fail where I was able to recover my data even using RAID1. I've had 3 so far that have died over the last 5 years.
I was transferring about 1.5TB of video about 3,500 files, and the drive locked up about 200 gigs in. I took it as a fluke. Maybe it was my laptop. About 200 gigs in it fails again. I try to access it from 3 other systems I have in the house, both wireless and wired. I can ping it, but I can't access its web interface or get to my data. No luck. Another cold reboot and it's responsive again.
My opinion on this drive: It's slow! Even configured for optimal speed it still falls way below the network connected speed of gigabyte and is below wireless-N speeds. It's unreliable. Within 24-hours it's went into a coma twice and has needed cold reboots to bring it back to life. The drives haven't failed, the hardware/software keeps failing that supports the drives.
If my dive fails will I have my data? Your answers are as simple as yes or no. I think of it as Schrödinger's cat theory. Mitigate the risk! My solution to people that want reliable backups would be to get an every-day drive and buy another drive. Mirror the data on your own and store that backup in a safe place.
I've never understood the gap between a products concept on paper and its usability off the assembly line. Small issues, like placing a phones antenna where a normal user would cover it with their hands. Why not allow their products to be tested in real environments (not a lab) prior to distributing them.
It's about 6:30AM with coffee in hand. If I'm all over the place with this review it's because I'm still half asleep.
I do NOT recommend this drive.

Good nas, slow performance August 11, 2010 Bayan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This nas is good. It was easy to setup. Just plugged it into my router and my macbook saw it right away over wifi. I'm getting speeds around 2-4 mb/sec over wifi, and around 15 mb/sec when i plug the ethernet directly to my comp, which is okay, but they advertise it like it will get gigabit speeds. It took about 5-6 hrs to do a 65gb time machine backup. It works good as a media streamer too, and my xbox was streaming videos via wifi just fine. loading times were acceptable. All-in-all a good device, does its job, and I like the features it offers. I like that I can surf the web, do a time machine backup and stream a movie all at the same time. The mionet thing is okay, but I am still looking for a more elegant solution to accessing my files remotely.
Next time tho, I'm just going to build my own linux nas server so I can get faster transfer speeds, and customize it with media server software of my choice. Anyone have any good mini motherboard configurations they can recommend?
The perfect choice for the money. August 11, 2010 Imre Polik (PA, USA) Well, I was quite concerned about the speed that the others are reporting, but I'm getting 80mbps, which is as good as I could get from my laptop. This is of course through an NFS network share, FTP access is slower (about half the speed), probably due to network overhead. I cannot comment on the Apple specific access modes. Setup was easy, the documentation is quite thorough, and for this price, this seems to be an unbeatable unit.
I noticed it does get a bit hot, but it's not too dangerous yet. As for noise, it's about the same as you get from a desktop hard drive. You do hear when there's some activity.
Great drive/backup solution - dismal software August 4, 2010 Steve Skinner 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great product, in terms of hardware. Don't even bother with the bundled backup software. It's pretty terrible, and uses way too much of your computer's memory. You don't need it. The setup and management of the drive can all be handled with the browser-based utilities, which are very good and easy to use. For backing up to this drive, I recommend and use GFI backup software which is free, featured loaded and very good.
