2 out of 5 stars Flips bits randomly (if rarely)   September 10, 2010
Incisive_Idiot (New York, NY USA)
The DS209 set up well and seemed solid, so I transferred about 25,000 files (all my documents and a bunch of WAV files and other miscellany) to it. I took a set of MD5 checksums from the source and compared them automatically to the copies I made on the Synology using md5summer.exe. Scarily, about 20 files did not copy properly, though no errors were mentioned in the copy process. I confirmed this by manually comparing the files (using cygwin cmp) and indeed they did not match--strangely, all of them had some bytes that transferred as 02 instead of 00. I of course checked the disks (brand new WD Caviar Greens), tried copying from a different computer, using different cables, different NIC settings, etc., but always about 10-20 files would get random bits flipped in them. The odd bit is that it was mostly (but not always) the same files.

I returned it, got a QNAP TS-210, put the same disks in it, and everything copied perfectly several times--including the files that sometimes or always had had problems copying to the Synology.

This was only 10-20 out of the 25000 files that had problems, but I bought this for data integrity purposes, so this would seem to be unacceptable. Perhaps it was just a bad NIC in this one unit, but I wonder if it's a rare logic flaw somewhere in the unit--otherwise why would the same files always get corrupted? Weird...

4 out of 5 stars Awesome... Purely Great   September 6, 2010

this is a great NAS for the average person that really wants a great way to share and store files. This has great features like the audio station that lets you stream music in a very well kept manner, or just the abilities to run a simple nas. It's Ajax interface is great and its ease of use is phenomenal. If your looking for a personal home nas to stream some data and have things organized well... it will sure do the job. I have yet to find a NAS that pacts this many features into it for the home user.

1 thing... it only supports USB 2.0... i would love to see USB 3.0 at a $199 price tag it should at least have esata.... But im sure that wil come out in next version (only reason for 4 stars)

5 out of 5 stars Better than expected   August 25, 2010

Manual needs some serious work but for the advanced user you should have no problem. System works great overall!

5 out of 5 stars Look no further for a NAS device   August 15, 2010

I spent weeks going over reviews for NAS devices. This unit (DS209) and other synology units seemed to have really good reviews. I figured I couldn't go wrong after seeing good reviews. I am very happy with my purchase to say the least. Not only did I get a storage device, but I got alot more. The photostation option is really nice for family members to see your photos over the internet. Filestation allows you to locally/remotely manipulate the stored files. Also, it has a DNLA music server for devices like PS3, networked AVR's, ect. The features of this device are very nice considering the price.

I am no network technician but I was able to use just about every feature this device has to offer. For people with no knowledge of networking you will want someone to help you, this is no "magical" NAS device that does setup for you. The instructions are written for someone who has server/NAS experience so don't expect a newbie to read the instructions and totaly figure this thing out.

This unit does have RAID capabilty when two SATA drives are installed. I initially installed one 1TB caviar black drive from WD. After setup and testing I purchased another 1TB drive to have mirroring capability. The drives are NOT hot swapable. The unit has to be shutdown and disassembled to get to drives. Not a big deal for a home user, but a small business may not want to shutdown server to replace a drive.

Over all I am very happy with my purchase. Synology makes a solid unit with feature-rich software that is easy to use. Bottom line - you will NOT be disappointed with this NAS.

8/24/10 Update: Synology has just released their DSM 3.0 for beta testing. I have had it for a week now and all seems well. I really like the android apps. The new interface is better as well.

3 out of 5 stars Great Product Lacks Support   August 10, 2010

Love the product but it took a lot of effort to get it set up. Lots of time spent on Synology website trying to figure out basic operations. A more complete manual and telephone support would make this product top notch. Don't buy this product unless you are a network expert or are very willing to spend time scouring the Synology web site for help. E-mail support was also poor and responses usually incomplete, requiring a follow-up e-mail.
