Great alternative to dedicated Linux PC server August 13, 2010 D. Devine (Seattle, WA) I'm really happy with this product. In the past, I've had a dedicated PC running Linux for home server use, after that hardware died, I started looking for a replacement.
My search criteria included the need for Subversion, file sharing, and simple web server. My biggest concerns were cost, power usage, noise and hassle of the buildup. I really didn't like the idea of running another PC 24x7 just for the storage space, and I'm getting tired of building PC's. I looked at the Synology several times before I actually purchased. The unit is in the same range as really low-end PC's, but didn't have the hassle of hardware assembly that I would have gotten at Fry's or Newegg. Synology and Amazon don't do a really great job of differentiating the models (like how's a DS210J different from a regular DS210). I found that information afterward on the Synology Wiki ([...])
After getting this unit, I had the drive installed and case put back together in less than 3 minutes. Installed in the server closet and formatting the drives in less than 10. It took a little reading, but installing Subversion also went without a misstep. Had so much fun, I've installed a few other packages too. Really great embedded Linux box.
All in all, I'm happy with this. The interface is great, the Synology community is pretty strong (see the wiki site) and the device is quietly doing backups for me every night and holding the family photos. Good purchase
Great but can be hard to setup August 10, 2010 Alan Davis (Alhambra, Ca) I use it really for RAID backup and had to call tech support to help me get up and running. I'm not a tech guy so others may find it easier.
Once I was up and running, it works well. No complaints.
Synology NAS July 23, 2010 Mike Amazing for the price. This NAS does everything you can think of for a home server. It has so many features that it is a bit difficult to configure. I spent some time playing with all the features then cleaned it out and set it up the way I wanted it.
Nice idea but flakey execution July 18, 2010 MGMcd (Columbia, MD USA) 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying that I am a computer technician by trade. This should have been a nice web-based photo sharing solution, but it was slow (low RAM, I know) and eventually started kicking out hard drives, and then stopped working altogether. Couldn't get to the admin page. All the lights on the panel were blinking. This after 3 days of use.
I know how to work with electronics and did not short anything or introduce static, and the hard drives were compatible with this model (interesting side note: check the vendor's web site for compatible hard drive models before purchasing!)
This is the first item I have had to return to Amazon. I am getting an online solution instead. NAS should be more trouble-free than this, but I guess you get what you pay for.
Wow, very impressive. July 16, 2010 G. Ware (Colorado USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was looking for a NAS device to store home movies off of my Sony camcorder as well as place photos, documents, music on it for backup. I run a Mac and Windows PC's and I have Time Capsule for my Mac and it works great but no redundancy for it. I had looked at other NAS devices but they usually just offered basic NAS features with some thrown in less then adequate additional features and management capabilities.
I came across the Synology on Amazon as I had not heard of them before. I'm very glad I did as this device is very impressive. It is easy to setup for Windows and MAC and has great management capabilities as well as tons of features. I have mine setup as a RAID 1 with two Samsung 1tb drives. This is one of the few confusing areas of this device in that you have to check the Synology web site to see what drives are compatible. I had at first purchased a "green" type of drive to try and save power but later found out that it was not compatible with this device so I had to return and order the Samsung drives after validating they were tested to work with this model. One of the features I love is the power on/off capability of this device. You can set a daily, weekly or weekend schedule for when the device turns on and off. This is great for saving power as I'm not home all day so unless I'm using one of the other features for remote access I don't need to have it idle and chewing up watts. I only wish it had more flexibility so that you could have multiple on/off schedules such as off during the day monday-friday but on during the day on weekends. Right now you can have one schedule so that is a bit limiting but overall this is still a great feature and more companies should be doing it to save power.
I also love the notification capabilities so that it can send me emails if any issues with the system/drives. For a home device at this price range that is a great feature. There are so many other features that are great but I will only list a few that are my favorite.
1. DLNA server capability for connection to DLNA capable devices such as Playstation.
2. Itunes server- great for streaming music or videos. Note: as of now you cannot stream directly from Synology NAS to Apple TV for movies.
3. Remote access- can remote to system for files, steaming, or ftp. One issue is that the list of routers that it can setup with for remote access is limited and I was surprised not to find Time Capsule as this device supports Time Machine. Without router on list then you have to know what ports to forward.
There are so many its hard to talk about all of them but some other cool ones are web hosting, ability to ssh to system, and record video from cameras.
All these features and an easy to use device (still might be confusing for general users) at a great price and you have a winner in my mind.
